We can follow all the newest trends and buy all the must-have looks of the moment, and still not actually look 'stylish' or put together. The major difference will be in fit and tailoring. A huge pet peeve is when girls (and I say girls because usually when we become women we realize what were doing wrong in fashion) have the most beautiful outfits, gorgeous figures, immaculate makeup and their clothes are ill fitting. Most often, I see skinny jeans that have that extra 6 inches of fabric around the ankle and create that bubble. This is so easy to remedy. You don't have to know how to sew to hem pants anymore! Drug stores everywhere sell a double sided hemming tape so all you have to do is cut, turn up, and tape. DONE.
Don't let this be you...
You should always wear clothing that fits and isn't too tight to look chic. If you found a top that is discounted 80%, but is two sizes too small for you, that is not a good enough reason to buy it. Do not purchase things that you will constantly have to tug on, pull, fix, re-button etc.. If you don't feel comfortable in what you are wearing, you won't portray confidence. Confidence is the number one thing that makes us feel beautiful and appear beautiful/attractive to other people.
Do invest in a good tailor. If you have a figure that is not proportioned to regular standard sizes, things will not fit in certain places. A tailor is not SUPER expensive and you will find that you get a ton more use out of your clothes this way. If you work in an office, look into having custom made clothing by a tailor. My husband does this for his work shirts and the cost is similar if not identical to Express or Men's Warehouse dress shirts. You get to pick fabrics, colors, and everything is custom made to your lengths and curves.
In addition to this, there are fashion rules you need to break to step outside of the box. The following are 5
fashion myths that no longer apply:
1. Do not mix prints.
Mixing prints can work, but start out slowly if you are not comfortable with this. I, under no circumstance, would recommend mixing 2 floral prints with different color stories. EVER. I would suggest mixing a floral print with a stripe. Or a stripe with leopard.
2. You have to match your belt to your shoes, or your shoes to your purse. |
To me, this doesn't apply unless you are a man dressing in a suit. The past couple of years there have been some awesome bags in beautiful bright colors and shoes as well. It would be a shame to miss out on owning a bag you love because you have nothing to match it to. Or to spend more money than you have to because you are buying everything just to match! You can get very creative with your accessories.
Again, start out small, like above, stick with neutrals.
3. No white after labor day.
This is one that I always hated when I was younger because I loved winter whites. White is a yes as long as it is in cold weather appropriate fabrics. White wool trousers or blazers and white cashmere sweaters are so glamorous looking. White leather(or faux) is also fabulous for fall or winter.
4. Plus size ladies should wear looser clothing.
In my opinion, the only ladies that can pull off that boxy loose fit are tall thin models. Show off the curves, girls, it will be more flattering and accentuate all the right curves. All you are doing when you wear loose clothes is hiding your waistline and making you look a size bigger.
5. Wash your denim often.
DO NOT DO THIS. You have to break your jeans in, they will fit oh so much better if you trust me on this one. Also, if you wash them often, they will start to break down and lose their luster. To sanitize or deodorize, steam or freeze them instead.
Thanks for reading! Let me know if I left anything out.
